Roes U16s Get Winning Start (2004)

Aghyaran 2-4 Owen Roes 6-11

The U16 footballers of Owen Roe Leckpatrick took some inspiration from the club’s U14 winners. Under the management of Hugo Devine and Joe Kelly the juveniles got off to the best possible start in their league campaign with a convincing 6-11 to 2-6 victory over Aghyaran.

The Roes lined out with 4 of their regular starters missing through injury, illness and holidays, however the lads were not perturbed as they led 2-7 to 2-4 after the opening half.

The 2nd half saw the Leckpatrick men pull away with a fine team display. High work rate, and determination saw them tag on 2-2 before the hosts found range. This only served to see the visitors increase the tempo to pull away, as every chance was finished with aplomb. Tony McLaughlin, John Harper and Conor McCay were all on target as the Green and Reds ran out winners, on a 6-11 to 2-6 score line.

The under 16 outfit will be at home to Dregish next Wednesday evening. Hopefully the support that has flowed through the club in the past 7 days will turn out to support the lads.

Castlederg 3-7 Owen Roes 0-10

The U16 footballers of Owen Roes crashed out of the 2004 Juvenile Championship at the hands of a hungrier Castlederg side last Thursday evening. Following a 6 point league victory at the same venue earlier in the year, the visitors started favorites and raced into a 2 point lead, but complacency appeared to kick in and St Eugenes stormed back to hold a 4 point half time lead. with number 11 Meehan making an impression.

However the O'Neills struck back in fine fashion as the 2nd half commenced, with John Harper to the fore as the game was leveled up 10 minutes after the restart. However Castlederg weren't to be denied, with McGrath and Conor Lynch hitting scores they immediately regained the initiative. Two goals in the closing 10 minutes of the game sealed the victory.
