U-16 Grade 3 Championship 2007

Quarter Final

Sat 8th Sept- Aghyaran 3-10 Owen Roe's 4-5

Owen Roes Juveniles Denied by Late Aghyaran Goal

The saying that ‘sport can be a cruel game’ was truly evident in Aghyaran on Saturday past, as the hosts denied Owen Roe's in the quarterfinals of the Grade 3 Juvenile Championship. The St.Davog's were hot favourites as they had defeated the O’Neill's youngsters twice in the League stages already. However after 60 minutes they breathed a huge sigh of relief to take their place in the last four.

The visitors started sprightly and Aaron Lynch gave them an early lead, before the Aghyaran number seven levelled up. Indeed the same player was in fine place kicking form to knock over two more scores from frees to take a two-point lead.

A stylish Neil Mc Crossan kick brought them back into it, before the hosts regained their two-point lead. With a quarter of the game gone, a high ball into the Aghyaran square bounced loss, and Conor O’Neill reacted smartest to fist to the net. Aghyaran hit back with a free, but there was now a buoyancy about the boys from Leckpatrick.

Conor Friel worked hard, and sent a fine pass into the path of Aaron Lynch who carried it forward and unleashed a smart drive into the corner of the Aghyaran goal. McCrossan added to the lead with a point as the red and greens fought tenaciously for everything.

In defence James Gormley and Darren Devine were belligerent in their defending, aided by Stephen McCauley, the game Conor Casey and James Barr. Barr was at the centre of things minutes later when his tackling provided the foundation for another Owen Roe's major. Jason Barclay’s rasping shot was well saved by the home net minder, but O’Neill was again first to react to acrobatically dive, and flick home.

As half-time approached Aghyaran forced onto the front foot, hit back with three unanswered points to go in 0-8 to 3-3 behind.

The early exchanges of the second half were crucial. Within five minutes of the restart, Owen Roe's found themselves two points adrift, as the St.Davog's pounced for two early goals. Indeed keeper Aaron Doherty made a fine save to deny a further goal minutes later. Nonetheless the expected Aghyaran charge didn’t occur.

Instead Tony McGonigle’s young charges gritted the teeth and hit back in style. A long ball forward was caught by sub Liam McCay who twisted and turned his marker before placing coolly into the bottom corner.

It was game on once more, Lynch and Barry Doherty striking wide. Aghyaran levelled with another dead ball, cancelled out by a similar score from McCrossan. Both teams dug deep, as once more Aghyaran levelled up, only for a Lynch free with 5 minutes left to restore the slender O’Neill's lead.

Aghyaran continued to press, with the visitors threatening on the break. However as the clock struck 60 minutes, the hosts delivered one last, hopeful ball into the Owen Roe's square. Unfortunately for the men from Leckpatrick it was fisted past the helpless Doherty to give Aghyaran the lead, and ultimately the win.

This was a bitterly disappointing afternoon for the Owen Roes U16 side, however they showed determination, bravery and ultimately pride that made the performance a success if not the result.
