Wed 30th Aug – Fintona 0-5 Owen Roe’s 1-3
Fintona lost out to Owen Roe’s on Wednesday evening on a final score line of Fintona 0-5 Owen Roe’s 1-3.
The wet and windy conditions did not help as Fintona sought to overcome the visitors. It was the Leckpatrick side who started best with an early goal from full forward Dermot McMenamin. In an uneventful first half, littered with frees Fintona failed to register a score. The visitors managed only one other point from a 30 metre free. Half time score Fintona 0-0 Owen Roe’s 1-1.
The visitors again started well and had two unanswered points before Fintona opened their account with a point from Sean Lynch. Aaron Mc Carney added to the total with a free before Pearse Mc Carney scored a nice point after some good work on the right wing. Fintona could've had a goal as their full forward rounded the keeper before saying a great Stephen McAuley block prevent the Green flag. Ryan Martin closed the gap further as Fintona dominated the closing stages. A further free from Aaron Mc Carney left just one point the margin however Fintona were unable to get the leveling score as the Roes hung on.
This was a game, which the visitors dominated for long periods. The match statistics reveal that the visitors hit sixteen wides over the hour. They also hit both the upright and the crossbar on a number of occasions. Allied to this were a number of shots, which dropped short and were cleared effectively by Barry Cunningham in the Fintona goal. Fintona could have stolen it at the end but the wet conditions did not help. A better second half performance from Fintona helped to keep the visitors at bay. A major improvement will be need if they are to extend their playing season through the championship.
Match Statistics:
Fintona: Points 5, Goals 0, Wides 1, Frees 33

Sat 17th Sept – League Q/F’s
: Owen Roe's 2-11 Killeeshill 3-19 AETThe juvenile footballers of Owen Roes and Killeeshil fought out a titanic U16 quarter final in Glenmornan today that saw the visitors run out winners by a skewed 11 points. In a topsy-turvey game the host side could have won the contest in normal time, but in truth had to thank home keeper Ryan Devine for a series of stunning stops at key times.
Owen Roes played with a forceful wind in the opening half an took the early initiative with Aaron Doherty, Kevin O'Donnell and Paul Devine all scoring early before St.Marys replied with two points in quick succession. Devine, Doherty, Ryan Logue and two Dermot McMenamin strikes in the 18th minute regained the momentum for the hosts with Killeeshil only chalking the one effort in this period.
However the visitors shrugged off the wind disadvantage to storm back with a free, followed by a sweet strike that hit the net to put one in it. Things could've been worse for the Leckpatrick boys as Devine made a stunning save to deny another goal a minute later, Killeeshil pointing the rebound to leave the visitors level at the break but with strong wind advantage.
Killeeshil were first on the board in the second period before Ryan Logue ran was at the centre of a fine Owen Roes passing move and was there to convert to level up. Keeper Devine was again called upon to deny the visitors a goal with a superbly executed block. All the same the hooped jerseys of Kileeshil were about to embark on a fruitful spell as they rattled off four unanswered points towards the finishing line.
The battling qualities of the home side had to come to the surface and that they did. Firstly Paul Devine's huge free caused consternation and sailed into the back of the net before Dermot McMenamin found himself one on one with the keeper to smash home to leave the O'Neills two up. Back came the visitors to level it up with two late scores, before Owen Roes number 1 Devine executed another brave stop as the Killeeshil forward charged through on goal.
As time ticked by, the home side appeared to have executed a smash and grab as McMenamin clipped over a nice score. The visitors refused to wilt though and equalized three minutes into added time.
The action was put on hold then for 25 minutes as the referee made contact with County officials to ascertain the rules regarding extra time or a reply. The former was decreed and it was game on once more.
Devine struck first as Owen Roes started the 10 minutes each way with the wind. It was still tit for tat, and Killeeshil opened their extra time account with a fine score, before Devine flung himself across goal to tip a goal bound effort wide. The resulting 45 was worked over to give St.Marys the lead.
The game was still anyone's, however the superior fitness and strength of the away side took hole. Three unanswered points took the game away from the hosts, and a killer goal in the 19th minute of extra time ended it. The home side were dead on their feet, and the St.Marys added a late 1-1 to end the game and seal their place in the last 4 of the grade 3 league.
Both teams should be congratulated on an entertaining game. Killeeshil will be thankful to escape with a flattering 11 point win, but they can also point to the number of goal opportunities they were denied by the excellent Ryan Devine.
Owen Roes extends their wishes to the Killeeshil player who got badly injured during the game.
