Drumragh Storm Back to Win Cracker
Owen Roes 2-15 Drumragh 6-5
Owen Roes and Drumragh served up a championship cracker in sun kissed Glenmornan
on Saturday afternoon. Ahead by 10 at the break, the home side capitulated to
lose out after 60 minutes by a pair of scores.
In the first half Owen Roes served up some sparkling football, and led via points from Cathal McShane (0-2), Ronan McNulty and Sean Dooher. The Sarsfields came back with a goal, but it was to be all the home side for a long spell. Seamus Dooher, McShane, and Ronan McNulty pointed before that man McShane was on hand to punch home at the far post, followed by the same man hitting a white flag.
With Stephen Harper, Ryan Devine, Kevin Kelly and Aaron Boggs stubbornly defending Jamie Devine's goal it was all one way traffic. McNulty, Seamus Dooher twice, McShane and Ryan McAleer all added to the Roe's haul as a 13 point cushion was opened. The visitors hit back with 1-1 before a McShane free closed the half.
Half time - 1-14 to 2-1
It looked nailed on that Owen Roes would be into the last eight of the
competition but Drumragh had other ideas, and roared into the home side from the
restart. Two goals within the first ten minutes of the whistle set the tempo,
and the Green jerseys tagged on a further 2-3 without reply! At this stage
the O'Neills were on the ropes, but they were not out of it yet!
McShane stroked home another goal to add to his tally to reduce the arrears to two. It looked as if Owen Roes would take a late lead when a McNulty effort was parried by the keeper, and then cleared from the line. However the Sarsfields pointed once again to re-establish the goal lead, and only another McShane white flag troubled the umpires, as Drumragh edged through.
This will be considered one that got away for Owen Roes, but it should serve as a lesson that football is a sixty minute game especially in Championship football!
