U-14's 2004
Owen Roe's U-14's Grade 3 Champions 2004!!
Championship
Glory for Leckpatrick Lads!
Owen Roes 1-13 Fintona 0-4
An outstanding team display by the younger footballers of Owen Roe O’Neill’s saw the club collect the Tyrone
Grade 3 Championship trophy on Saturday night, 26th June. Buoyed on by a large
support the U14 lads emerged winners on a 1-13 to 0-4 score line. To put the
result into context the last time a Youth Championship trophy rested in
Leckpatrick was 1985, several years before all the players on this squad was born!
Most of the players suffered
severe pre-match nerves, but the referee's opening whistle seemed to be the
medicine that they required. Right from the start they took the game to Fintona,
with Marcus McGinley catching the eye with his runs from centre-field. It was
from one of McGinley’s runs that Roe's took the lead, Paul Devine knocking
over. Shortly after Conor Friel and Dermot Mc Menamin added to the lead, with
fine points.
However with a strong wind at
their back, it was critical that a significant lead was shaped in the opening
half. In a lethal opening salvo, the red and greens continued to latch on
scores. Ryan "Luger" Logue was especially effective knocking over 3 first half points,
and setting up second scores of the game for Friel again and half-forward Paul
Devine. As the half came to a close, Fintona hit back with two scores of their
own to close the gap. On the stroke of the break, McGinley deservedly pointed to open up a
7-point half time lead.
Heavy rain, and fierce wind
greeted the commencement of the second half as Fintona pressed forward hoping
to eat into the Leckpatrick’s lead, and with a few well-taken points they did
this twice in quick succession. The Roes defence however held strong. Aaron
Lynch had a great battle with his opposite number 14, and came out of defence
several times with possession.
In the 40th minute of
the contest Mc Menamin got another point weaving through several tackles to
score, before Logue kicked over. Fintona though fought gamely. The Pearse’s
knew that a goal was required, and can find themselves unfortunate to have come
up against a superb Roes back line. Gerard McShane and Stephen McCauley
tackling gamely to defend the lead, and captain Gerard Devine linking well with
Kevin O’Donnell, and Barry Doherty. The one time Fintona got through, Aaron
Doherty did very well to tip onto the bar. However gaps were opening up at the
other end.
With 10 minutes to go McMenamin
fired home another score, before the key facet of the contest. Duck McCay’s
men broke quickly against a stretched Fintona defence through Logue, who fired a
superb ball into Mc Menamin, who shook off his marker for the first time all
evening, to advance on goal before picking his spot in the corner of the net
past Pearse McCarney who had been superb for Fintona all evening.
When Rory Doherty added a point
near the end, the contest was all but over. Nevertheless Fintona still kept
coming forward, and they were eventually rewarded with a penalty kick.
Unfortunately for them Aaron Doherty was determined to keep a clean sheet, and
stood up well to deny the Fintona attacker.
Seconds later and there was joy in
the Owen Roes camp, as the referee ended the game. All was left was for the U14
Championship trophy to be presented to Captain Gerard Devine to cheers from the
Leckpatrick supporters.
The players and management of Owen
Roe’s U14 side would like to thank all the fans who made the journey to
support the team tonight and all year. They’d also like to extend their huge
appreciation to Devine's Sand and Gravel, Glenmornan, for their
sponsorship for the season.
The Committee of Owen Roes would like to wish the young Fintona player who got injured at the conclusion of the game a speedy recovery, and thank the Pearse’s for a good, clean contest.

The Annual Awards Night for the U-14s, who were Tyrone Grade 3 Champions and All-Ireland Feile Champions, was held on Friday 17th September and were deemed to be a huge success. The night flowed as a journey through the 2004 year that the U14s had. First up the large crowd enjoyed a repeat of the All-Ireland Feile Final that the club played in, as it was shown on the big screen in the Club's lounge.
Upon completion of the video U14 manager Willie Doherty talked to the crowd thanking various people for their input over the 2004 year. One of the key topics from the speech was the aspect of development. Every night the numbers at training were practically 100% from February right through to mid-July when the season ended. This reflected in the development of the players that the management teams witnessed. Willie also pointed to the last batch of young players that came through Owen Roe to lift an under age Championship back in 1996. That team contained Declan McCrossan, Jim Devine, and Paul Bradley. All three went on to captain Tyrone to All Ireland Finals.
The club then welcomed special guest, Tyrone captain Brian Dooher who congratulated all the players, managers, and the club as a whole on the success they have had this season. Brian went on the say that "this part of Tyrone is improving slowly but surely, " and that all of a sudden North Tyrone is not an easy place to go to, to play Football. Brian also pointed to the aspect of development. He said that "each and every player should continue to work hard, and not see this as the end of your success. As Tyrone found to our cost this year, when you go out having won something, teams will try that little bit harder to beat you, and it is something to be ready for here on in. But keep working hard." The ultimate ambition of a young player in a club like Owen Roe was another topic the Tyrone captain talked about, "Growing up, before I dreamed of Tyrone, my ultimate ambition was to get out there and represent my senior club. This should be something that every one of you should be aiming for. In 4 or 5 years time you will be battling for Senior Team places. Get this, and work hard and Tyrone success is something that will just happen." Brian aptly concluded his speech by wishing the Tyrone minors and Owen Roe's Brendan Boggs good luck for the All Ireland Minor Final.
Brian then handed back over to Willie Doherty, who announced the 2004 award winners. First up the 2004 panel were presented with the Championship medals that they picked up earlier in the season. Before the individual winners were announced. Click HERE to see pictures of the individual winners.
The final surprise for the U14 squad was the announcement that in recognition of their All-Ireland winning achievement the Tyrone County board has generously agreed to take every single player and the management to the 2004 All Ireland Final in Croke Park.
The Owen Roe club would like to thank Brian for taking time out from his schedule to present the awards and for the kind words that he afforded the youngsters and the Club.
