Clogher Ease Past Ragged O'Neill's
Clogher 2-10 Owen Roes 0-7
Hopes of an opening day ACL win evaporated in Clogher on
Sunday for the footballers of Owen Roes. Four points down at the break, an
opening unanswered four point salvo put paid to the visitor’s ambitions.
Clogher opened the scoring in the opening minute via Sean McCafferty, only for Mark Kelly to level up from a dead ball. However equality was not going to last long, as a mistake in the Roe’s back line allowed the ever potent Ciaran Shields through to bag a goal.
Brendan Boggs executed a smart free to keep the O’Neills in touch, but Paddy
McKernan and a Mark Tierney 45 gave Clogher breathing space.
Mark Kelly earned his side a free that Boggs dispatched,
and it was Kelly’s turn to send over a free as the half closed out. However
Owen Roes task was about to be magnified as Brian McElroy slotted home to Dylan
Early’s goal. Another Kelly free left Owen Roes four down at the break.
Any hopes of a comeback were blown away by a lightning
Clogher start to the second period. Shields and McKernan grabbed a pair of
scores each, and only a smart Early save denied McElroy his second goal.
Kevin O’Neill, and Conor McCay nabbed a pair of Owen
Roes points from play after 45 minutes, before Shields clipped over once more. A
bad day was to get worse as Noel Mullen and Ronan Parker had their afternoons
ended early by Brockagh whistler Donal Dorman. As time ticked through Barry
McElroy came forward to seal the spoils for the hosts.
A bad day at the office for Owen Roes, who just didn’t
get into a stride all day. With Brockagh visiting Glenmornan this Sunday, Gerard
Porter’s men know they have to bounce back straight away.
