Roe's Reserves Advance to Championship Quarter-Final

Owen Roes defeated Stewartstown 2-12 to 2-3 in Greencastle to eventually advance to the next phase of the reserve knock-out. After two draws, this was the sides third encounter to see who advanced to a home quarter-final tie with Derrylaughan.

The Reserve side saved their best display of the season for this tie, with a youthful side looking sleek and hungry. Mickey Dooher, Gerard Kelly, Sean McBride (0-3) and Kevin O'Neill were among the point scorers in the opening half, with the excellent Barry McCrossan hitting a goal near the half time interval. However despite all the fine play, the sides went in level. Stewartstown hit two goals, and three points to reply to the Roes' efforts.

If the first half exhibited a good Owen Roes' performance, the second half was even better. Gerard Kelly opened up the half with three points, with a McCrossan point sandwiched in between. With Stewartstown struggling to contain the O'Neill's attacks, Stephen Boyle came off the bench to bag another goal to stretch the O'Neills' advantage. With time closing out Kelly knocked over his fifth score of the contest, and Barry McCrossan added to his tally to leave Owen Roes victors on 2-12 to 2-3 scoreline. Credit to an excellent Owen Roes back line who held the Harps scoreless for the second 30 minutes.

Owen Roes: Andy Devine, Michael Caldwell, Sean 'Mor' Devine, Rory Devine, Brian Kelly, Paul Kelly, James McCrossan, Stephen Kelly, Sean McBride (0-3), Barry McCrossan (1-2), Oliver Barrett, Kevin O'Neill (0-1), Robin McMullen, Mickey Dooher (0-1), Gerard Kelly (0-5) Subs: Stephen Boyle (1-0) for McMullen.

Roe's v Stewartstown Replay Ends All Square Again

The Reserves travelled to Stewartstown last Saturday evening for their Championship first round replay. The Roe’s got off to an early 2 point lead thanks to points from Aidan Mc Crossan and Michael Caldwell but the hosts soon found their range with a point of their own. The Roe’s were on top in the first half and after a goal from Gerard Kelly they seemed to be in control approaching half time. Stewartstown however rallied and picked off 2 more points to close the gap to 4 points at half time.

In the second half Stewartstown came out the stronger and hit 6 unanswered points with time fast running out. The Roe’s weren’t to be outdone however and points from Aidan Mc Crossan and Steven Kelly brought the sides level again at full time.

Extra time started with a dominant Stewartstown racing into a 2 point lead, but a ball delivered in from outside the 45 by Mc Crossan was fisted to the net by Barry Mc Crossan. Stewartstown showed they too could find the net themselves when they finally managed to beat Roe’s ‘keeper, Andy Devine, 2 minutes later, and followed this with another point. The Roe’s were now playing catch up again and when a goal bound shot was saved by the hosts own ‘keeper, Eamon Mc Bride managed to put the rebound in to the net, leaving things all square again for the extra time interval.

The second half turned out to be a quiet affair with Aidan Mc Crossan again putting the Roe’s a point up, but the Harps drew level again almost on the stroke of full time to push this fixture to another replay this coming Saturday.  All Reserve players are asked to be at training tonight.

Roes /Harps in Championship Draw

Owen Roes 1-11 Stewartstown 0-14

On Saturday evening last it was the turn of the Owen Roe’s Reserve team to field in their Championship. Stewartstown were the visitors to Glenmornan for this first round and tie against a depleted Roe’s side who missing several players.

In the second the home team upped the ante, and took the game to the Harps with several other players stepping up to make their mark on the score-sheet and indeed could’ve haven’t stolen the match on several occasions but were just not able to put away the visitors, and the match ended in a draw 1-11 to 0-14, when extra time should have been played to decide a victor, but this option was ruled out as per instructions given to the referee Scores in the second half came from again Oliver Barrett (0-01), Sean Devine (0-01), Aidan Mc Crossan (1-01), Sean Mc Bride (0-02), Gerard Kelly (0-01) and Clarke Stephenson (0-02).

Roes Denied by Harps Comeback

Stewartstown 1-9 Owen Roes 1-7

A second half comeback from the host side yesterday denied Owen Roes an opportunity to make it two wins from two on Sunday. The visitors had a strong breeze at their backs and used this to build up a useful half time lead. Sean McBride, Stephen Kelly, Martin Logue and Kiernan Kelly all firing over to compliment a goal from Oliver Barrett.

The second half though saw a complete reversal of fortune, as Sean McBride’s loan point was all the wares that the visiting side could show. Gradually the half time advantage was eroded, and Harps went on to take the contest by two points. Oliver Barrett saw red late in the game to cap a glum day for the red and greens.

Owen Roes: Martin Logue (0-2), Sean McBride (0-3), Oliver Barrett (1-0), Stephen Kelly (0-1), Kiernan Kelly (0-1)

Roes Reserves Pick Up The Points

Owen Roes 0-11 Derrylaughan 0-3

The second string footballers of Owen Roes upstaged their senior counterparts with a very impressive eight point victory over Derrylaughan Kevin Barry’s in Leckpatrick on Sunday. In all honesty the margin of victory could have been even greater had the chances that were created been converted.

In a performance that was excellent all over the field, special mention must go to Brain Kelly, and Brendan McCrossan, who marshaled their defence duties magnificently, keeping the opposition to just three scores all day. Mickey Kelly belied his young age by providing a mature, strong performance in midfield, with the evergreen Ambrose McAleer knocking over several impressive scores.

Another display like this may start to put pressure on some of the established senior stars in the Club.

Owen Roes: Andy Devine, Michael Caldwell, Brian Kelly, Rory Devine, Stephen Boyle, Brendan McCrossan (0-1), Eamon McBride, Mickey Kelly Jnr, Stevie Kelly (0-1), Sean Doherty, Gerard Kelly (0-3), Sean McBride (0-2), Ambrose McAleer (0-2), James McCrossan (0-1), Barry McCrossan.

Subs: Oliver Barrett (0-1) for Barry McCrossan, Robin McMullan for Eamon McBride.
