Owen Roes 2002
OWEN ROES 0-6 GREENCASTLE 1-10
(Friday 5th April 2002)
Greencastle got off to a great start and scored 1-2 inside the
first 10 minutes before Eoghain Rua opened their account with a superb Chris
Kelly score from outside the 50' from play. Aidan Christy and Paul Kelly were
forced to switch with one another in the full-back line inside the first 15
minutes to steady up the defence and Owen Roes were four points behind at the
break.
Half-Time: Eoghain Rua 0-3 Greencastle 1-4.
Greencastle extended their advantage on the restart but then had a man sent off
midway through the 2nd half for a second bookable offence. Although Eoghain Rua
went on to apply a lot of pressure in the final quarter they could only reduce a
nine-point deficit to seven points as some good chances were wasted. The ball
rarely left the Greencastle half of the field in the closing stages with the
Roes spare man putting back in any ball that came out to him. However, with Sean
Teague on top in defence for Greencastle, most of the home team's attacks were
quickly closed down.
Full-Time: Eoghain Rua 0-6 Greencastle 1-10

MIXED FORTUNES FOR OWEN
ROES
AGAINST POMEROY
(Sunday 7th April 2002)
On Sunday last, Owen Roes Reserve and Senior teams travelled to
Pomeroy. For the Reserves this was their first competitive game of the season,
and they opened the scoring with a free from full forward, Gerard Kelly.
However, Pomeroy were quick to reply with a goal and 2 points. In another Roes
attack, Malachy Gallagher was unfortunate to have his shot at goal saved by the
keeper, the ball going over the bar for a point instead. Pomeroy increased their
lead further with another point from a free. Again Gerard Kelly pointed, this
time from play. The first half ended with Pomeroy leading by 1-7 to 0-6, further
points coming from Sean Mc Bride, Lornie Crossan and Tom O' Neill. After
half-time, Joe Kelly and Gerry Doherty came on for Gavin Donaghey and Bert Kelly
in the full-back line. Lornie Crossan scored the first point of the half,
followed by one from Stephen Boggs. These were quickly cancelled by 2 points
from frees for the home team. Sean Doherty had only just come into play for
Malachy Gallagher, when his shot on goal was well saved by the keeper. This
however was the start of the comeback for Owen Roes with 6 points in a row, all
from play, from Gerard Kelly, who was unfortunate to hit the crossbar with a
good goal chance. A second shot at goal came off the upright but Tom O' Neill
pointed from the rebound. Pomeroy were only able to reply with two late points
from play.
Full Time Score: Pomeroy 1-11, Owen Roes 0-15.
Owen Roes Reserve team: Stephen Mc Callion, Bert Kelly, Brendan Boggs, Andrew
Devine, Gavin Donaghey, Stephen Boyle, Stephen Boggs (0-1), Stephen Kelly,
Mickey Kelly, Hugh Gallagher (C), Lornie Crossan (0-2), Sean Mc Bride (0-1),
Malachy Gallagher (0-1), Gerard Kelly (0-8), Tom O'Neill (0-2). Subs: Joe Kelly
for Gavin Donaghey, Gerry Doherty for Bert Kelly, Sean Doherty for Malachy
Gallagher, Jude Kelly for Andrew Devine, Andrew Devine for Mickey Kelly.
In the Senior match that followed, Owen Roes almost pulled off a remarkable
comeback, only to have a draw snatched away in injury time. Pomeroy opened the
scoring with a point from play, then another from a free, before Declan Mc
Crossan opened the Roes account with a point from a free. Pomeroy then added a
further 2 points and their lead was stretched further when a defensive error let
the Plunkett's in for a goal, the ball bobbling into the net in a packed
goalmouth. Owen Roes however kept attacking with a further 2 points from Declan
Mc Crossan and 1 from Chris Kelly. But with Pomeroy scoring 3 more points and
another goal before the half time whistle, things did not look favourable in the
second half for the visitors. Before half time Declan Mc Crossan switched to
centre half forward with Chris Kelly taking his place in midfield. The half time
score read: Pomeroy 2-7, Owen Roes 0-4. The second half started well for the
Roes, with Ronan Parker unlucky to have his shot saved by the keeper, but the
rebound was put over the bar by Mc Crossan. Pomeroy attacked but the Roes
keeper, Sean Devine, made a good save to prevent another goal. A point from
Chris Kelly was followed by 4 from Mc Crossan and one each from Parker and Aidan
Mc Crossan. Owen Roes were now only 2 points behind with 28 minutes of the
second half gone and injury time to play. Pomeroy scored another point, their
first of this half, but then followed this up with another goal to seal the game
almost 5 minutes into injury time. Owen Roes could only manage anothr point from
Mc Crossan to leave the scoreline at Pomeroy 3-8, Owen Roes 0-13.
Owen Roes Senior team: Sean Devine, Paul Kelly, Kevin Doherty, Declan Bradley,
James Mc Crossan, Stephen Dooher, Aidan Christy, Kevin Moore (C), Declan Mc
Crossan (0-9), Aidan Mc Crossan (0-1), Chris Kelly (0-2), Paul Bradley, Mark
O'Neill, Ronan Parker (0-1), Willie Doherty.
DREGISH 0-6 EOGHAIN
RUA 4-15
(Friday 19th April)
On Friday night last, the Owen Roes Senior team travelled to Dregish and recorded their first win of the season. The first goal of the match came within 10 minutes from Ronan Parker. From that point the Roes never looked back as the half-time score reflects (3-10 to 0-0). The Owen Roes defence was solid throughout and the forwards and midfield operated well as a unit.
The first half was all one-way traffic, but Dregish got it
together in the second half with 6 points. However,a goal from Chris Kelly
finally killed off their resistance. This was an encouraging team performance
from an Eoghain Rua perspective, with scores coming from 8 different players.
Tom O'Neill made his Senior debut in the game and was outstanding in his running
on and off the ball and with his passing.
Owen Roes: Sean Devine, Willie Doherty, Kevin Doherty, Bosco Devine, Stephen
Dooher (0-1), Paul Bradley (0-1), Aidan Christy, Declan Mc Crossan (1-4), Kevin
Moore (0-1), Aidan Mc Crossan, Chris Kelly (1-3), Tom O'Neill (0-1), James Mc
Crossan, Ronan Parker (1-4), Stephen Boyle (1-0).
Subs: Sean Mc Bride for J. Mc Crossan.
OWEN ROE O'NEILL'S 0-7
KILLEESHIL 0-9
(SUNDAY 21ST APRIL AT GLENMORNAN)
In Sunday's game at Glenmornan, Owen Roes and
Killeeshil had to field without their county players, namely Declan Mc Crossan
and Kevin Hughes. However both teams still served up a close, thrilling match
throughout the 60 minutes. Killeeshil made the early running, taking advantage
of the strong wind and notching up a 0-4 to 0-0 lead in the first quarter.
However by half-time the Leckpatrick team had pegged this back to a 1 point
deficit at 0-5 to 0-6.The second half saw the Roes having the lion's share of
possession but could not convert this into scores, with even the visitors
managing to clear what looked certain to be a goal off their own goal-line in
the last few minutes. Again as in other matches this year, Owen Roes have saved
their best football to last but it comes too late, almost salvaging matches in
the last quarter.
Half-time Score: 0-5 to 0-6; Full-Time Score: 0-7 to 0-9.
Owen Roes: Sean Devine, Declan Bradley, Kevin Doherty, Bosco Devine, Stephen
Dooher, Paul Bradley, Aidan Christy, Kevin Moore (0-1), Chris Kelly (0-1),
Willie Doherty, Aidan Mc Crossan (0-1), Tom O'Neill, James Mc Crossan, Ronan
Parker (0-3), Stephen Boyle (0-1).
Subs: Paddy Mc Nulty (0-1) for S. Boyle, Mark O'Neill for J. Mc Crossan.

Harps Progress at Roes Expense
Friday 9th August: Owen Roes 0-10 Stewartstown 1-8
Tyrone Intermediate Championship First Round
In Gortin, Stewartstown had just a single point to spare over Owen Roes, the Harps recording a 1-8 to 0-10 win. Conor Hamill, Darragh Burns and Declan Mitchell were the key players for Stewartstown and it was the latter who grabbed the winning goal two minutes from the end. The absence of Tyrone star, Declan McCrossan, with a broken leg was a major setback for Owen Roes.

Derrylaughan 1-15 Owen Roes 0-4
(Sunday 28th Sept 2002)
Owen Roes found the going tough away to a well-placed
Derrylaughan side but it was only in the second half that the Kevin Barrys began
to pull clear.
A fairly low-scoring first period ended with Derrylaughan in front at 1-3 to 0-3
after a Brian Daly goal approaching the half-time whistle, Aidan McCrossan with
a couple of points at the other end.
The picture changed somewhat in the second 30 minutes as the home side chalked
up a flurry of scores, including points from Leon McKee and Thomas Carney to
mention two.
Scorers - Derrylaughan - Leon McKee 0-5, Tom Carney 0-4, Brian Daly 1-1, Enda
Cushnahan 0-3, Brendan Quinn 0-2
Owen Roes - Aidan McCrossan 0-3, Ronan Parker 0-1
Owen Roes 0-16 Aghaloo 1-4
(Sunday 13th Oct 2002)
Owen Roes recorded a big win at home to
new Paddy Cullen Cup champions Aghaloo but with only twelve points they will
face a tough time this weekend in trying to preserve their Division Two status.
The host men led at the half-time break by 0-6 to 0-2 but a penalty ten minutes
after the restart converted by Stephen Donnelly put Aghaloo in closer
contention.
Ronan Parker, scorer of five points on the day, Aidan McCrossan and others soon
got back the Roes back on track with a string of points and they ran out good
winners.
Owen Roes Scorers- Ronan Parker 0-5, Aidan McCrossan 0-4, Chris Kelly 0-4, Sean
Og Devine 0-2, Paddy McNulty 0-1
Aghaloo Scorers- Stephen Donnelly 1-2, Martin McCarron 0-1, Sean Douglas 0-1
Owen Roes 0-11 Rock 0-8
(Sunday 20th Oct 2002)
CHRIS Kelly scored seven points to crown a splendid display at midfield for Owen Roes but for Kelly and his team-mates it was to be in vain given other results on the day.
The Roes, victors over championship winners Aghaloo the previous weekend and who
had to play without Declan McCrossan for several matches due to injury, finished
just one point away from a play-off place with all the teams immediately above
them winning their final matches.
Rock won the league title because of their overall consistency but on this
occasion they met a determined Roes team who led by 0-6 to 0-5 at half-time and
although Ciaran Gourley equalised after the restart the home side refused to let
things slip.
Kelly had some super points and despite Martin McCreesh converting six frees all
told Rock could not turn it around, Owen Roes left to ponder what might have
been had all hands been.
Owen Roes - Chris Kelly 0-7, Ronan Parker 0-2, Paddy McNulty
0-1, Sean Og Devine 0-1
Rock - Martin McCreesh 0-6, Darren Mullan 0-1, Ciaran Gourley 0-1
