League Quarter Finals
Fri 2nd June – Eskra 3-8 Owen Roe's 1-10
Championship
Wed 3rd May – C’Ship: Owen Roe’s W/O Aghaloo
Owen Roes qualified for the last 8 of this year's grade 3 Championship after a WO against Aghaloo who were unable to field. The result means that the Leckpatrick side will host Stewartstown, who defeated Eskra by a point, in the next round.
Fri 30th June - Championship 1/4 final - Owen Roes 3-6 Stewartstown Harps 0-8
The minor footballers of Owen Roes fired in an excellent team display in sun-kissed Glenmornan tonight to advance to the final four of this year’s Grade 3 Championship against a highly fancied Stewartstown side.
Indeed it was the Harps who started the strongest racing into an early two-point lead, before Conor McCay’s predatory instincts saw him find the net in the 5th minute. Tyrone minor Captain Gareth Devlin pointed from play to equalise for the visitors, before good work from Paddy Corry allowed McCay to slot over.
The home side started to exert some sustained pressure but failed to convert their chances. Only a couple of Mark Kelly points either side of a Devlin effort to show for their toils to leave the interval score 1-3 to 0-4.
As in the first half the Lough shore men started the sharpest. Devlin knocked over again, before his side equalised with a well-worked score from a free kick. However as was the case in the first half a lightening O’Neill’s break sliced through the opposition defence for McCay to coolly slot home.
Mark Kelly, from a placed ball, added to the pressure followed by a John Harper white flag as the Leckpatrick lads started to pull away. Clarke Stephenson got his rewards for a disciplined midfield performance to get on the score sheet, before Owen Roes struck a lethal blow.
Ryan Logue was summonsed from the bench to enter the forward line to replace the injured Mark Kelly, and swiftly made an impact. Mickey Kelly picked up the ball and powered through centre field before feeding the young wing-forward. Logue looked up and slammed the ball into the goal for stunning strike.
The Harps though refused to lie down, and put pressure on a solid Roes’ rearguard. However led by the cultured Gerard Devine, they had little joy. A couple more Devlin frees was all the East Tyrone men had to show for their efforts as the home side remained cast-iron.
This was a tiptop show from the home side where everyone from Aaron Doherty out showed class, discipline and skill. However it’s important to remain focused and grounded, as this result will only inspire greater challenges.
Owen Roes: Aaron Doherty, Gerard Devine, Mickey Caldwell, Kieran O’Donnell, Kevin O’Neill, Kevin O’Donnell, Davy Harte, Clarke Stephenson (0-1), Paddy Coary, John Harper (0-1), Mickey Kelly, Conor McCay (2-1) Mark Kelly (0-3) Subs: Ryan Logue (1-0) for Mark Kelly 41 mins, Paul Devine for Davy Harte 60 mins.
Tuesday 8th August
Championship semi-final:
Owen Roes 0-12 v Kildress 3-10 (AET)
A young Owen Roe’s Minor team travelled to Gortin on Tuesday night to take on Kildress in the semi final of the Tyrone Grade 3 Championship. It was to be a disappointing night for the Leckpatrick side when they saw victory slip from their grasps in the final minute of injury time, sending the game into extra time. If ever there was a time that the phrase “snatching defeat from the jaws of victory” could be used then this was it! However the game proved to a thrilling one, a game of doggedness and determination versus some class, poise, coolness and skill, call it what you will.
The Wolfe tone’s side started the game brightly, hitting 3 unanswered points before John Harper opened the Roe’s account in the 7th minute, followed on by a Mark Kelly pointed free to close the gap to the minimum. The game then entered a scoreless spell, with neither side able to gain any headway, although it must be said Kildress kicked several wides during this time which would have opened up a lead for them. It wasn’t until the 24th minute of the first that Kevin O’Donnell broke the stalemate with a point to draw the sides level for the first time. Unfortunately this was to be short lived with Kildress hitting 2 more points to go in at half time with score at 0-05 to 0-03 in favour of the mid-Tyrone side.
The Leckpatrick side came out in the second with a lot more determination and really took the game to the Kildress boys, and indeed could have take a commanding lead only for several shots at goal going wide. David Harte got his first score of the game with a point and this was quickly followed up by another from John Harper, drawing Roe’s level again, only for Mark Kelly to step up with a pointed free for the Leckpatrick side to the lead for the first time in the 15th minute. Kildress quickly responded however and scored 2 more points to restore their lead by the 17th minute. It was now all to play for and turning into quite a thriller with both sets of supporters getting very much behind their teams.
However the Owen Roe’s lads hit something of a purple patch going into the last 10 minutes of normal time, picking off 3 unanswered points via John Harper by the 29th minute. Then fate took over. Kildress were awarded a free in the 31st minute and duly took their point. There was now a point in it and the Roe’s hopes of a narrow victory had their supporters biting the nails. However the game’s not over till the whistle blows and unfortunately it blew to award another pointable free in the 34th minute of injury time, a point the Kildress free taker was only to happy to stroke over the bar
It was now do or die in extra time. Both sides played with great hunger and determination, the prize being a spot in the Championship final. However Kildress were to prove the stronger in the extra time period, with the game being virtually killed off within a few minutes of the throw-in when they scored the first goal of the game. This rocked the north Tyrone and they couldn’t seem to build any sort of momentum to recover, the only player to score in this first half being John Harper with a point. More misery was to be heaped on the Leckpatrick side in the second half when Kildress managed to find the Roe’s net again on another 2 occasions, with the only Roe’s player to score now being substitute, Ryan Logue.
The Owen Roe’s boys may be disappointed now but they can take some heart from their performance. It was they who played the dogged and determined football for the first 60 minutes against the constant pressure that Kildress was putting them under, mounting wave after wave of attacks from their own defence, only to come to nothing when they met the Roe’s rearguard. This Leckpatrick side is made up of many of the Club’s U-14 side which won the Tyrone Championship and All-Ireland Feile in 2004 so things do look bright at this age level with many of these players still having a year or 2 left to play Minor football and maybe next year they can go that step or two further in next year.
Thanks to all the players and management for all their work and commitment during this long season, and also to all the parent and supporters who came out on Tuesday to get behind the team. Best wishes also to Kildress in the final.
