Sat 19th May - League Quarter finals - Rock 3-08 Owen Roe's 4-11
Wed 6th June - League semi finals - Owen Roe's 3-9 Brackaville 6-13 (In Greencastle)
Owen Roe's hopes of reaching the 2007 grade 3 league decider were blown away in Greencastle tonight by a whirlwind Brackaville start. With 10 minutes of the contest gone the East Tyrone side had established a 1-6 to no score lead- All seven scores from the Brackaville full forward. Liam McCay got the Leckpatrick opening score before Brackaville found the net one more to establish an eleven point advantage.
However credit the to the O'Neill youngsters who slowly negated the long ball tactic to establish their own stamp on the game. Cathal McShane pointed before his side were awarded a spot kick. It was Jason Barclay who showed nerves of steel to send a great kick into the bottom corner. Barclay was at it again a minute later to point. Suddenly it was almost all one way traffic as Owen Roes pushed forward, but were denied on three occasions by the big Brackaville number one, none the less a late goal and a point from the opposition re-established their ten point lead.
The second half would establish if the Leckpatrick lads had the stomach for a battle, and an early Fergal McNulty point suggested that was going to be the case. Brackaville got a point back, before lively full forward Cathal McShane was alert to find the net to put the pressure on Brackaville once more. McNulty was in range again either side of a couple of opposition scores, before Liam McCay raised a Green flag to reduce the lead to 5 points with still 20 minutes remaining, following great work from Stephen Kelly. At this stage the men from Leckpatrick were fighting tooth and nail all over the pitch- none more so than diminutive defenders Ricky Devine, and Stephen Harper.
The next score in the contest was crucial, but alas it was the men from Brackaville who broke Leckpatrick hearts with a neat shot that gave keeper Ryan McShane little hope. McNulty, McCay, McShane, and Barclay all pointed once more before the end, but the earlier efforts had taken its toll and Brackaville were able to coast home with a couple of late goals.
Although disappointed, the Owen Roe's youngsters can reflect on the fact that they gave a physically stronger Brackaville a tough time over the course of the hour, and aside from the opening quarter competed as well throughout. With most of the squad eligible to return next season, opportunities to learn will have been grasped and built upon.
Owen Roes: Ryan McShane, Stephen Harper, Conor Doherty, Seamus Dooher, Conor Casey (c), Ryan Devine, Barry Devine, Jason Barclay (1-2), Stephen Kelly, Joe Casey, Fergal McNulty (0-3), Liam McCay (1-2), Cathal McShane (1-2).
